Passage 통로, 2024

『통로』(2024)는 ‘따개비’의 몸을 중심으로 한 내용으로 따개비가 껍질을 열고 담으며 안과 밖의 물질이 순환하는 것을 블랙홀과 같은 통로로 상상하고, 심원한 시공간으로 상상의 여행을 떠난다. 투채널 영상으로 제작되었으며 두 영상은 약 3미터 거리의 폭을 두고 겹쳐서 볼 수 있기도 하며, 따로 볼 수 있게도 되어 있는데, 한 영상에서는 해양쓰레기에 붙어 바다를 표류하는 따개비와 그와 얽힌 미시적인 해양 생태계의 모습을, 다른 영상에서는 두 발굴가가 선사시대 바다의 흔적이었던 황무지를 걸으며 대화를 나누는 모습을 보여준다. 이들은 예전에 바다였던 끝없는 사막을 걸으며 따개비가 남긴 바다의 흔적과 심원한 시간 속 생명의 변이에 대해서 사유한다.
2채널 영상은 각각 서로 다른 내용을 담고 있는 듯 보이지만, 어떤 순간 앞쪽 스크린의 두 인물은 뒤쪽 스크린의 존재와 대화를 나누기도 하고, 서로 다른 세계가 짧게 교차되는 순간을 입체적인 스크리닝 기법을 통해서 드러낸다. 영상에서 등장하는 어린 아이는 ‘미래는 내일 온다’고 말하는데, 언뜻 당연한 말 같지만 내일이 되면 또다시 ‘내일’이 하루 뒤로 물러나기 때문에 당최 닿을 수 없고 알 수 없는 미래에 대한 자조와 인간적인 것을 넘어서는 알 수 없는 영역이 있음을 전한다.

『Passage』(2024) centers around the body of barnacles, imagining their shell opening and closing as a channel through which matter circulates, akin to a black hole. This concept invites viewers on an imaginative journey through profound spacetime. Created as a two-channel video, the two screens can be viewed overlapped with a gap of about three meters, or separately.

One video depicts barnacles drifting in the ocean, attached to marine debris, and the intricate micro-ecosystem intertwined with them. The second video shows two excavators walking through a desert that was once an ocean, engaging in a dialogue. As they traverse the endless expanse of sand, they reflect on the traces of the ocean left by barnacles and the profound transformations of life over time.

While the two-channel video appears to present different narratives, there are moments where the figures in the front screen interact with the presence on the back screen, revealing intersections of disparate worlds through a multi-layered screening technique. In the back video, a child says, "The future comes tomorrow." Though this seems like a simple statement, it underscores a paradox: when tomorrow arrives, it simply becomes "tomorrow" again, creating an unreachable, unknowable future that transcends human understanding and hints at an enigmatic realm beyond.
