Your Periphery Is My Center 너의 바깥은 나의 중심이다, 2021
나는 2014년부터 한강에 관심을 가지고 여러 가지 작업과 활동을 했다. 도강하며 한강에서 발견한 사물과 동물, 풍경을 사진과 드로잉으로 기록하고, 텍스트와 이미지로 된 여러 자료를 아카이빙해왔다. 이러한 한강과 관련된 경험, 축적된 수많은 정보와 자료는 머릿속 어딘가에, 하드 드라이브에, 메모지 어딘가에, 흩어져서 좌초되어 있었다. 이 좌초된 삶들을 되살릴 수는 없겠지만, 이것으로부터 다른 이야기가 엮여 나올 가능성을 염두에 두었고, 2021년에 웹 플랫폼이라는 공간에서 게임의 형식으로 여러 레이어를 연결 지어 보여주는 작업을 해보고자 한다.
웹 플랫폼은 서사를 가진 게임처럼 시간성을 가지고 한강 안으로 진입한다. 강물 그 자체, 섬들(밤섬, 여의도, 저자도)을 지나서 도시와 연결되는 배수구를 지나 마지막에는 상상의 섬에 도착한다. 처음에는 납작한 2차원 드로잉의 이미지로부터, 3D 애니메이션까지 이어지며, 차츰 색과 덩어리를 입혀가며, 세계의 감각을 시각적으로 확장시키며 가장 마지막에 도달하는 섬에는 인간의 시선에서 보이지 않고 멀리 있는 존재들을 가장 사실적으로 그려낸다. 이 섬의 이름은 '끝섬'으로, 그동안 인간 중심의 세계에서 밀려난 여러 사물과 비인간 존재들이 공존하고 있는 장소이다.
이 전시는 온라인플랫폼 기반이며, ‘끝섬’에 도달하는 영상에서 연계되어 『트러블 트래블 Trouble Travel』 (유은순X정혜정, 페리지 갤러리, 2022.1.7~2.12)에서 그 이후의 이야기를 오프라인을 전시를 통해서 이어서 볼 수 있다. 페리지 갤러리에서 열리는 전시의 제목은 다나 해러웨이의 ‘트러블과 함께하기’에서 차용하였으며, 똑바로 선 것이 흔들리는 것, 다종다양한 존재들과 함께하는 것, 자기 자리를 지키기보다는 끊임없이 움직이고 머무르지 않아야 한다는 것의 이야기를 전하고자 한다.
이 작업은 한강이라는 도시 속 자연을 출발로 하여, 시공간을 자유롭게 이동하며 전개되는 서사를 통해, 인간중심주의적 세계가 해체되고 인간 존재와 인간 이상의 존재가 서로 혼종 하는 가상의 섬인 <끝섬>의 풍경과 그들의 세계 인식 방법을 상상해봄으로써 지구라는 공간을 공유하는 공동운명체로써 생명정치의 맥락으로 세계관을 확장시키고자 한다.
I have been interested in the Han River since 2014, creating various works and taking on different activities. I documented objects, animals, and landscapes I have discovered while crossing the river through photographs and drawings, and I archived different materials in text and images. Such experiences, accumulated information, and materials about the Han River, I saw, were scattered and stranded somewhere in my head, on hard drives, on written memos. It would be impossible to revive these stranded lives, but I considered the possibility of weaving out a different story out of them. So, in 2021, I would like to connect different layers in the form of a game on a web platform.
The web platform enters the Han River with a temporality that resembles the temporality of a game with a narrative. One passes through the river itself, the islands (Bamseom, Yeoido, and Jeojado), and the waterway, finally arriving at an imaginary island. At first, it starts as a flat two-dimensional drawing. It then develops into a three-dimensional animation, gradually adding color and mass to visually expand the sense of the world. On the island that one finally arrives, beings that are distant and invisible to human eyes are depicted in the most realistic manner. The name of this island is ‘End Island,’ which is a place where various objects and non-human beings that have been pushed out of the human-centered world coexist.
The exhibition exists on an online platform. Through a video depicting the arrival at the ‘End Island,’ it is linked to an offline exhibition to take place in Perigee Gallery under the title Trouble Travel (Yoo Eunsoon X Jung Haejung) from January 7 to February 12, 2022. The title of the exhibition at the gallery is borrowed from Dona Haraway’s “Staying with the Trouble.” It intends to deliver a story where something standing upright sways, being together with various and diverse beings, and has to move constantly instead of defending one’s static place.
In the end, this project takes the Han River as nature within the city as a starting point. Through a narrative that unfolds through freely moving time and space with freedom, it imagines the landscape and the perception of the world of the ‘End Island,’ an imaginary island where the anthropocentric world is dismantled and human beings and beings beyond humans intermingle with each other. By doing so, it invites us to consider ourselves as members of a community that shares the common destiny and intends to expand our worldview in the context of biopolitics.
정혜정은 드로잉, 영상, 설치, 상황에의 개입 등 다양한 형식을 통해서 기존의 세계에 대한 법칙을 뒤흔들어보고 그 과정에서 균열과 틈을 발견하는 작업을 해오고 있다. 최근에는 인간, 인간 이상의 존재와의 공생, 비거니즘, 에코페미니즘, 경계 가로지르기 등의 키워드에 관심을 가지고, 나와 다른 존재가 되기 혹은 하기를 상상하고 실천하고자 한다.
Jung Haejung has been producing works that dismantle the existing rules of the world and discover their gaps and cracks, employing diverse artistic formats such as drawing, video, installation, and intervention. Recently, Jung took on imagining and practicing the ‘becoming’ or ‘doing’ others with interest in coexistence with beings beyond humans, veganism, eco-feminism, and crossing borders.
